J-Term

What is J-Term?

J-Term is a distinctive educational experience providing students with in-depth, experiential learning in a particular area of interest. Supplementing the annual two semesters of traditional education, J-Term adds to an excellent education at HCS that is truly comprehensive and designed to assist students’ discernment of God’s overall plan and purpose for their lives.

The Goal

We encourage HCS students to learn new skills, discover service opportunities, or to explore potential vocations. As they explore, they do so with great confidence that the Lord “has a plan for them” (Jer. 29:11) and is faithful to bring that plan to “completion” (Phil. 1:6).

Internship Opportunities

Juniors and seniors in good academic and behavioral standing may apply to participate in a J-Term internship. These experiences allow a student to job-shadow a professional in a chosen career field. If students have difficulty securing an internship host, they may work with the school counselor on an individual basis.

During J-Term, Kayleigh interned in the Animal Training and Handling Department at Sight & Sound Theatres. She was able to observe and help with the training sessions with the horses, camels, goats, llamas and more.

“It was very fun and I learned a lot about the process of training the animals to get them show ready.” - Kayleigh '23

J-Term Courses

During J-Term, students can also participate in a variety of service opportunities such as Love the Hill with Wildheart Ministries and PA Farmshow Services. Evolve Youth Trades Academy also provides the opportunity for students to explore trade jobs.

In-class options cover fascinating topics like Backyard Astronomy, Born to Run, Card Tricks, Kendo Dueling, Personal Finance, and more. Most courses are specifically designed to introduce students to potential future careers in an engaging manner.
