Middle School

The 6th-8th grade Bible curriculum includes broad biblical surveys covering the Gospels, Old Testament, and New Testament. Students will gain a basic understanding of God's redemptive plan and the historical context behind each era of biblical history. They will see how all of the Bible points to Christ and explore how knowing Christ impacts their daily lives. Courses include:

• Bible 6 (Foundations of a Christian Worldview)
• Bible 7 (Old Testament Survey)
• Bible 8 (Survey of the New Testament: Romans - Jude)

The English & Literature courses focus on building a strong foundation in vocabulary, grammar, and principles of writing. Students engage in comprehension and theme analysis of literature. Writing projects include both research papers and creative writing pieces. Courses offered include:

• Literature & Writing 6, 7, and 8

All WSCA middle school students take courses in Spanish. These courses include basic vocabulary and grammar, as well as cultural study of Spanish and Latin American life.

Study Skills
This course helps students learn and review the skills necessary for building good study habits, responsibility, and personal life development. It covers such topics as growth mindset, organization, learning styles, memorization, listening, following directions, note-taking and test taking. Students will also have periodic check-ins with the teacher about workload and completed/missing work.

Middle school history & humanities covers World History and U.S. History. Students’ understanding of history will be deepened through the examination of historical documents, timelines, maps, cultures, politics, passages of Scripture and Biblical values. Courses offered include:

• World History
• U.S. History I and II

Students will review and build on basic math concepts in order to develop skills in quantitative and logical thinking. The courses are designed to empower students to solve real world world problems and to succeed in higher-level math courses in high school. Courses offered include:

• Foundations of Math
• Introduction to Pre-Algebra
• Pre-Algebra
• Algebra I

Students will develop basic to intermediate skills in music reading, notation, and performance. Students who choose to participate in an ensemble will have the opportunity to perform at least two times throughout the school year at the Christmas and Spring concerts. Courses offered include:

The aim of Physical Education & Health classes is to assist students in developing physical fitness and an understanding of the body that will encourage responsible decision making and lifelong health. Students are taught the integration of spiritual, physical, mental/emotional, and social dimensions of life as human beings made in the image of God. Courses offered include:

The middle school science courses at HCS introduce students to earth, life, and physical science from a Christian perspective. Topics include geology, cellular processes, genetics and more. Courses offered include:

• Physical Science

The middle school art curriculum is designed to build artistic confidence and to help students become proficient in the basic building blocks of visual art. Students learn about the elements of art, including line, shape, form, value, space, color and texture. They also practice principles of design such as rhythm, balance, and movement.
