Visual Arts
The visual arts program at HCS promotes creativity, curiosity, and technical excellence for the glory of God. Students are encouraged to develop their own creative expression while learning how to use various 2D and 3D mediums.
HCS also hosts an Annual Arts Fest celebrating student work and including a performance from middle school drama.
Elementary School
During elementary school, students learn to produce their own art using a variety of mediums. They also develop artistic habits such as planning, observation, perseverance, and reflection. Throughout the courses, students practice proper care for the materials and the art room.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten classes focus on the use of materials and fine motor skills through a wide variety of projects including mediums such as paint, chalk, markers, pens, paper, scissors, glue, clay, and more.
Grades 1-5
Grades 1-5 learn the elements of art (color, line, shape, texture, space, value, and form) by viewing and discussing great art and through projects, which include painting, clay, weaving, drawing, chalk and oil pastels, origami, print making, and more!
Middle School
Our middle school curriculum is designed to build artistic confidence and to help students become proficient in the basic building blocks of visual art. Students learn about the elements of art, including line, shape, form, value, space, color and texture. They also practice principles of design such as rhythm, balance, and movement.
High School
In high school, students will begin to master artistic mediums and explore their own artistic expression through painting, sculpture, photography, and more. At the end of each project, they will also participate in critiques designed to encourage critical thinking. Students will graduate with a foundation for lifelong appreciation of the arts and the tools necessary to pursue further intensive study.
